Home dental care is really important for your pet. Brushing is the gold standard of home dental care but in some pets it can be difficult. Ideally, you should be brushing your pet’s teeth daily. Having your pet’s teeth brushed once a month at the groomer is not helpful. Can you imagine if you only brushed your teeth once a month? There are different size pet tooth brushes to choose from and there are also finger brushes. It’s important to use a tooth paste made for pets and not human tooth paste which can upset your pet’s stomach. They come if different flavors such as poultry! Start slow with just a few teeth and reward your pet with treats. Gradually try to work up to doing the whole mouth.

If brushing will not work for your pet there are other home dental products to try such as water additives, dental wipes, dental sprays and dental treats. We carry a line of Vetradent products to choose from. A great way to see what products are good to try and effective is by going to the VOHC (Veterinary Oral Health Council) website. They have a list of dental home care products that are recommended by veterinary dentists.

Sometimes doing a combination of these products can be more convenient also. Some home dental care is better than none. Just go slow and try to see what works for you and your pet. The better care we take of their teeth the longer they will have them!
